Waikato: Three-wicket hauls for Ryan Thomson and Aaron Lowe spearheaded a comfortable win for 1st XI Division leaders Hamilton BHS Emerging XI over Morrinsville College.
The first round after the winter break was disrupted by rain, with delayed starts in three matches and no play in the other two.
Batting first after winning the toss, HBHS, in a game reduced to just 30 overs a side, reached a disappointing 127/8 after Mitchell Dickeson (21) and Cameron Barker (27) posted 51 for the opening partnership.
Useful knocks from Drew Divehill (25) and Ryan Thomson (20) lower in the order gave the innings further respectability.
In reply Morrinsville struggled, with only Tom Arnold (23) reaching 20 in the face of tight bowling backed by some good catching. Morrinsville managed only 95 before being dismissed in the 28th over.
A strong all-round effort from Chris Jamieson was not enough to steer his Hillcrest High team to victory in a game reduced to 45 overs.
Cambridge began well, with useful knocks from opener Jacob Crow and Jono Feast (at three) providing the bulk of the runs. But once Jamieson struck, their innings fell away. Jamieson took 6-38 and received solid support from Simon Roots, who finished with 0-15 from his nine overs.
Jamieson led the chase with 35 but lacked support at the top of the innings and accurate bowling from Ross Laidlaw and Shaun Bax slowed the momentum as the middle order fell apart. A late rally led by Kalana Senanayake (32 not out) and Dylan Griffin (30) could not retrieve the situation and left Hillcrest 12 runs short after their 45 overs.
After a remarkable turnaround in the weather conditions only 18 minutes of play was lost as the Hamilton BHS Development XI came up 14 runs short as they chased the 163 scored by St Peters School.
In trouble at 48/4, St Peters rallied on the back of a 45-run fifth-wicket partnership between Gwylim Prosser and Warrick Lynn. Ben Kittlety chipped in with some useful lower-order runs. Matthew Rees-Gibbs was the best of the St Peters attack, finishing with 3-22.
Hamilton BHS raced to 88 in the first 15 overs and were set to claim the Dave Hoskin Trophy. Kittlety then turned destroyer. He removed Jared Sun (29) in the 15th over and two overs later claimed Harry Corkill.
That was the start of the end for HBHS as Kittlety claimed the first seven wickets and finished with career-best 7-38. Nathan Lawry bagged the remaining three wickets.
With two rounds to play HBHS Emerging have a three-point lead over three teams in the chase for spots in the semifinals.
