Tennis is having a busy time with the naming of the junior Davis Cup and Fed Cup teams, the national 16s events and the secondary schools teams finals.
Martin Colenbrander (St Kentigern), Daniel Moser (Kristin) and Austen Childs (Tauranga Boys') will represent New Zealand at the junior Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Qualifying Competition in Colombo, Sri Lanka, next week.
Sixteen Asia/Oceania nations are competing for three spots in the finals in Spain in September.
The girls' junior Fed Cup team has also been named. Shona Lee (St Cuthbert's), Ellen Barry (Marion College) and Brittany Teei (New Zealand College of Sport and Education) will travel to Bangkok for their tournament, which starts on May 3.
Colenbrander and Childs will face each other in today's boys' under-16s singles final, and Lee and Barry will contest the girls' singles final.
The matches start at 8.30am at the Vodafone Tennis Park in Glen Innes.
The national schools teams events start tomorrow at the North Harbour Tennis Centre, involving 22 teams from 20 schools in mixed, boys' and girls' categories.
Favourites in the boys' event are the three Auckland schools, King's, Auckland Grammar and St Kentigern. Wellington College are also contenders.
In the girls' event, St Cuthbert's are the strong favourites. Their team includes the national under-18 champion Sacha Jones and the 18s finalists Lee and Lucy Cole.
St Kentigern have strength in depth, with new national 14s champ Savia Diaz listed at number four. The mixed title should be keenly contested by St Peter's (Waikato) and Kristin.
Multisport
Rangitoto College head girl Anna Hamilton has been selected for the junior elite (under-19) duathlon team in the world championships in Belgium on May 30.
The other high school student named is Macleans' Bruce Hunter, 17.
Rebecca Spence, also a student at Rangitoto, is in the New Zealand junior elite triathlon team for the world championships at Madeira, Portugal, on May 8.
Mountain Biking
More than 350 competitors took part in the secondary school mountain bike championships in Levin.
Chelsea Wills from Kelston Girls' High School was second in her senior cross-country race. She was also third in the downhill and fifth in the hill climb. Her consistency brought her a third overall.
In the intermediate events, Mahurangi College's Dan Wood finished sixth in the cross-country just ahead of Westlake Boys' Thomas Reynolds. Kate O'Neil, from Kristin, finished fourth, first and fifth in the cross-country, downhill and hill climb respectively for a fourth placing overall in the intermediate girls.
