College sport: Loe faces tough field in drive to fill trophy cabinet

Named the Westlake BHS Sportsman of the Year last week, basketball international Rob Loe has the chance to add the ASB Auckland Sportsman of the Year honours to his growing list of accolades at tomorrow night's annual awards dinner at Eden Park.

A finalist for the basketball award, Loe must also be in line for overall honours. He will face other worthy finalists including cricketer schoolmate Craig Cachopa.

Other standout performers for the sportsman award include Rosmini College's Gareth Anscombe, one of three finalists for the rugby award, Massey High badminton player Kerry Charlesworth and soccer player Thomas Spragg (Kings) who has just returned from the Fifa Under-17 World Cup in Nigeria.

The sportswoman award is wide open with Athlete Kerry Charlesworth (Rangitoto), soccer players Annalie Long (EGGS), a former overall winner, and Rosie White (Diocesan), Black Stick Sam Harrison (Diocesan), netballer Kayla Cullen (AGGS), multisporter Sophie Corbidge (Kristin) and yachtie Bianca Barbarich-Bacher (St Cuthberts) among the contenders.

CRICKET

Auckland: Three-wicket bags for Ashley Martinus and Jordan Sussex steered WBHS to a first innings win over St Kentigern in their 1A two-day championship match.

Chasing the 178 scored by WBHS on the first day, St Kentigern resumed at 58/3 but struggled in their run chase and were eventually dismissed for 112.

They resumed at 90/4 in their chase for the 217 scored by MAGS on the first day but managed only 130 as Darren Gray and Srinath Vauatallai shared seven wickets between them.

An excellent 70 not out from Vaidik Raj lead Mt Albert Grammar to 144/4 declared in their second innings. But they were denied a win as Rangitoto's Andrew Lane scored 48 as the visitors held out at 143/7.

AGS picked up first innings points despite skittling Kings for 113 in their first innings and then reaching 196/4 declared in reply. Batting for the second time, Kings fared better with Fa'asiu Fuat'i (75 not out) and Mark Chapman (59 not out) steering Kings to safety at 206/6.

Waikato: The coveted Dave Hoskin Trophy changed hands as St Paul's Collegiate upset fancied St Peter's School in their 50-over match.

Batting first St Pauls reached 191/9 thanks to Josh Lennsen (27), Scott Joblin (31) and Fraser Sherson (46). Mark Julian bagged 3-27.

St Peters began badly and . although Ross Fitz-John hit an unbeaten half century, James Hviid picked up 3-31 to steer St Pauls to a 40-run victory.

Despite a well-struck 74 from Matt Turton Hamilton BHS Development X1 managed only 163 against Hillcrest High. Hillcrest's Shaun Reed ended with 6-35 from his 10 overs as the HBHS innings fell apart.

In reply, Hillcrest got home with eight overs and four wickets in hand.

It was a similar situation for Matamata College who chased down the 157 scored by Cambridge High. Nik Boyle scored 56 for Cambridge while quick Nigel Hatfield picked up 3-32 from eight overs.

In reply Matamata struggled as Boyle impressed with the ball until captain Kurt Gaskell steadied the innings with a gutsy innings before Ryan Wilson got them home with a rapid 72.

WAKA AMA

James Cook High dominated the 12th annual junior regatta in perfect conditions at the Orakei Basin, winning the division one boys and mixed category. They also finished second and third in girls' final.

In a surprise, Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Hoani Waititi Marae won the girls' final.
