Cody Cole reproduced the good form he had shown in a recent foray across the Tasman to break a long-standing record in the northern region weightlifting championships.
Cody, from Te Kauwhata College, was named the champion lifter of the competition at the Millennium Institute after breaking Cameron Sinclair's under-16 56kg class snatch record with a successful 76kg lift at his second attempt on Saturday.
He then hoisted 90kg in the clean and jerk for a record 166kg total - bettered only by Khalid Slaimankhel (AGS) in winning the under-18 105+kg class.
Glenfield College's Chantal Lambrechs, the only girl lifting at the championships and also back from Australia where she competed in the national age group championships in Adelaide, failed by just 1kg to break her national age group record.
Matthew Marsden (West City Christian College) set the championships alight when he broke his national age group records in the under-16 47kg class. Marsden was successful in all his six lifts, breaking the records in the snatch, clean and jerk and total.
Injuries prevented Auckland Grammar's Mark Spooner and Simon Heeney from competing.
Penrose High, competing at this level for only the second time, produced some noteworthy results on a busy day.
While Cole was named champion lifter, AGS filled the other two spots in the overall honours with Arshad Hoosen and Avantha Hewavitharana being recognised.
Cycling
Junior racing provided the highlights of the fourth round of the waterfront time trials, with AGS bouncing back to win for the first time since round one, holding off WBHS by 12s. Macleans were only a further 6s back in third.
Their senior team completed the boys double but again they were pressed all the way before getting home 14s clear of St Kentigern despite being a rider down before the turn.
Attention now turns to this weekend's North Island championships in Ngaruawahia with team time trials on Saturday and individual road races on Sunday.
Hockey
Kirk Linderboom scored for Westlake BHS virtually from the hit-off to put his team on track for an eventual 4-0 win over Pukekohe in the first round of the boys inter-city competition.
Goals to Mark Nicholson and Garrick Frittelli had WBHS 3-0 ahead at halftime. Brad Cachopa scored the only goal of the second spell to complete the scoring.
In a minor surprise, Rangitoto College, the third-ranked North Harbour team, held Auckland and national champions Kings to a scoreless draw. RUGBY Frontrunners AGS and Kings scored big wins in seventh round 1A action but teams immediately below them on the points table lost ground when surprisingly beaten.
In the clash of neighbours, Kings raced out to a 37-0 lead before Otahuhu grabbed a late try for a final 37-7 scoreline.
With Ash Moeke turning in a solid kicking display, AGS made light of the away disadvantage to beat St Kentigern 38-15. St Kents restored some respectability with two well-constructed tries.
Third-placed MAGS were walloped 32-3 by Kelston BHS while fourth-placed St Peters were undone 24-23 in a cliff-hanger against Sacred Heart.
Tries from Edmund Malo and Ryan Aisher helped St Peters to a comfortable 20-6 halftime lead before Sacred Heart bounced back with a penalty try and a series of penalties before sealing their unexpected victor with a last-minute try in the corner.
St Pauls too scored a surprise win with their 38-5 effort over fifth-placed Tangaroa on the back of a strong forward effort.
Takapuna GS continued their run at the top of the North Harbour championship by edging Rangitoto 11-10 to share the lead with Massey, who got home 14-8 over Rosmini.
Soccer
Inspired by a hat-trick from 15-year-old Mark Withers, MAGS beat Kings 5-1 to retain their lead, on goal difference, over AGS at the end of the first round of the senior A1 championship.
Damien Fonoti marked his return to the Mt Albert team, by scoring a goal in each half as MAGS went to the break 3-0 ahead. Kings grabbed a late consolation goal.
WBHS were in all kinds of trouble early in their away game at Macleans.
They fell a goal behind within three minutes and soon after lost combative Callum Foote with a broken nose.
Nick Herd scored the equaliser and Daniel Morgan-Howell, with his fifth goal in as many games, scored from a corner for a halftime 2-1 lead.
The issue was eventually settled with a late penalty and a final 3-1 scoreline.
A couple of days later, Westlake played their postponed Chatham Cup match against northern league first division leaders Three Kings United at North Harbour Stadium.
Down 0-2 at halftime, they fought back to 3-3 at fulltime to send the game into extra time but the effort told and the gallant Westlake side went down 6-3.
