King's College will be representing the Auckland region at this weekend's Gillette Cup 1st XI cricket tournament, but they will have tough competition if they are to win the four-team event.
Defending champions Hamilton Boys High School have retained the majority of the team who won the title last year and had a good result over Rotorua Boys High in the inter-zonal final.
The two other teams are Wanganui Collegiate and Otago Boys High, who beat Marlborough in their zone final.
The tournament will be held at Fitzherbert Park in Palmerston North, starting on Friday.
The following day, also in Palmerston North, the girls' equivalent starts, featuring defending champions Epsom Girls Grammar, Napier Girls, New Plymouth Girls and first-timers Otago Girls High.
ARCHERY
The second team archery event was held in Auckland at the weekend.
In the girls' interschool match Baradene defeated Marist 3-0.
In the boys' A grade, King's College beat Auckland Grammar 2-1.
The boys' B grade was a 3-0 victory for Auckland Grammar.
Archery coach Brendan Gaffney says the sport has previously been an individual competition but so far the team concept has proved very successful.
"We are trying to encourage team archery in schools and so far it has gone from nothing to two tournaments this year and everyone seems happy with the format."
ATHLETICS
The national secondary schools championships start this Friday at Surrey Park in Invercargill.
The New Zealand schools team will be announced on the final day, Sunday.
Auckland athletes are expected to dominate the medals, with St Kentigern's Jordan Vandermade a hot pick in the senior javelin and shot-put.
Rangitoto College students Dino Bozzone and Graeme Read are medal contenders in the middle distance and sprints respectively.
Read, 17, excelled by finishing fifth in this year's world student games in Sherbrooke, Quebec.
Amy Jo Mann of King's College will be a good prospect in the girls' 400m race.
AWARDS
Rising tennis talent G. D. Jones and hockey international Frances Kreft have won the Sport Auckland individual junior sportsman and woman of the year awards.
Jones, a King's College student, gave many in the audience food for thought in his speech.
He is top seed for the Auckland tennis championships starting on Friday followed by the national 18s event at North Harbour and then the New Zealand residential champs.
Kreft, who attends Diocesan, has excelled in hockey at school, age group, provincial and national levels.
TOUCH
Kelston Boys won the Auckland junior tournament at Mt Wellington with a convincing victory over Wesley College 7-3 in the final.
In the girls' championship, Massey High and Auckland Girls Grammar showed ominous early form in scoring 15 and 17 tries respectively in their pool matches.
AGGS beat Massey 4-3 in the final.
SWIMMING
New Zealand swimmers Melissa Ingram (Epsom Girls) and Rangitoto's Corney Swanepoel will again be mixing it with the top names of world swimming this weekend when they take part in the United States Open in Seattle.
Swanepoel and Ingram both performed well at last week's World Cup meet in Melbourne but, with a large Kiwi contingent, will have to contend with a clutch of American Olympic champions.
