Three swimmers dominated Saturday's Auckland secondary schools individual champs at West Wave Aquatics in Henderson.
Sixteen-year old Dean Burger (Rangitoto College), Carmen Ooi, 13 (Kelston Girls), and Chad Korik, 13 (Liston College), won 12 titles among them, setting four records.
Burger beat Tim Van Der Kraay's 16-and-under 50m freestyle time of 24.82s with 24.68s.
Brent Griffiths of Auckland Grammar also went under the old time with 24.78s.
Burger swam a record time in the 100m free of 52.89s, beating Mark Herring's 1998 mark of 53.35s. He won two other races - the 50m butterfly and the 400m freestyle.
Star of the younger grades was Chad Korik of Liston College, who swam 1m 12.56s to beat Glenn Synders' 1m 13.72s record in the 13-and-under 50m backstroke. Korik dominated all his races.
Carmen Ooi won four races for Kelston Girls, setting a record in the 13-and-under 50m backstroke.
The record was 32.22s but she finished in 32.01s.
She also took the titles in the 400m freestyle, 100 backstroke and 100m individual medley.
LEAGUE
The national secondary schools knockout championship begins this week and continues over the next two months.
Last year's champions, Kelston Boys High School, have a tough draw after being beaten in the Auckland competition final 14-12 by St Paul's College.
Wainuiomata High School have again dominated the Wellington region and will be aiming to get past Canterbury's Aranui High School to make the final.
Northland College are rated as a strong team after beating Whangarei Boys High School in the local competition. Whangarei play Hamilton's Fraser in the first round with the winner to play Kelston the following week.
RUGBY
Auckland Grammar have a 10-point lead and remain unbeaten in the Auckland 1st XV competition after scoring a 22-7 victory over St Peter's and now play away in the final round-robin match at St Paul's.
The matches which really count include King's hosting Mt Albert Grammar School. If King's win and get a bonus point against second-placed MAGS their chances of making the semis will be lifted.
Kelston face Tangaroa in what is also a vital clash. Although out of semifinal contention, Tangaroa have been tough to beat and gave a fright to defending champions De La Salle, currently placed third, eventually going down 10-13.
In North Harbour 1st XV rugby, Westlake Boys have continued their domination.
They accounted for Birkenhead 64-0 in the latest round and look set to do something similar to Rangitoto, who are fifth.
Massey are second in the top six competition after scoring a 17-11 victory over Rosmini.
Unbeaten Auckland Girls Grammar defeated Papatoetoe High 29-5 and will now play Manurewa High School in one semifinal.
Onehunga beat Massey High School 19-5 and will face the other unbeaten team of the season, Otahuhu College, who had a narrow escape over Tamaki College 10-5.
