Te Puke High School can celebrate double success, with Daniel Stott winning the senior boys' 6km race and the school taking out the senior relay.
Stott was just 1m .03s ahead of schoolmate Sam McNally. Third place went to Riki Cambridge, from Kings High School in Dunedin, a further 10 minutes back.
Amber Morrison of Napier Girls won the senior girls' race, and Auckland had success with Thomas Reynolds of Westlake Boys in the intermediate boys' and Nicola Peat of St Cuthberts in the junior girls' race.
Te Puke beat Howick College in the senior boys' relay, and Auckland Grammar won the intermediate boys' from Westlake and Saint Kentigern.
Curling
Epsom Girls Grammar won the girls' title at the North Island secondary school championships held at Paradice Skating rink over the weekend, but only after a close final against Birkenhead College.
Epsom skip Renee Hooker had to make two tight shots to win the match by 6-4. In the playoff for third, the Westlake Ice Swans proved too strong for Kelston Girls, winning 12-2.
In the boys' final, Kelston boys were too strong for Rangitoto Schweizers, winning 9-2. In playoff for third, Long Bay College beat Rangitoto Thunderbrooms, 7-5.
Rugby
It's a crunch weekend for most of the top sides in the 1A first XV competition this Saturday.
Auckland Grammar have 38 points and clash with fourth-placed Kelston who have 28 and will need to secure some points to keep in semifinal contention.
Mt Albert, who also have 28 points, host St Peters, also on 28 points. Second-placed De La Salle should maintain their position on 29 points when they play at home against last-placed Otahuhu.
Badminton
Daniel Forrest (Northcote College) won the Auckland individual champs held at Auckland yesterday, defeating Rangitoto's Ben Jenner-Leuthart 21-7 in the semifinals and then accounting for Leo Yang (Kings) 15-7, 15-4.
Auckland Grammar's William Bok and Jeremy Liu defeated Westlake's Peter Chen and Lawrence Liew for the doubles' title.
Emma Rodgers (Edgewater) was defeated by Maclean's Assunta Wong 11-8, 11-5 in the senior girls' final, and Nicole and Vicky Copeland of Rutherford High beat Westlake's Renee Haggo and Anya Mabbott in three games in the doubles.
