The success of the A1GP in Taupo, where Jonny Reid won, rams home the fact that the abandoned V8 supercar street car race was an opportunity lost for Auckland.
Yes, it would have taken some organising around Victoria Park. Yes, a few people in the city would have been inconvenienced briefly.
But hey, it would have been mountains of fun, not to mention putting Auckland's name up in lights and attracting a bit of dosh to the metropolis. It might even have taught the city that it can deal with tricky tasks, instead of running from them all the time.
Cities are supposed to take on challenges and provide extraordinary events for the citizens. Auckland's loss, Hamilton's gain - and the Waikato will reap that gain in spades when the crowds flock to the racing in April.
