Sales of cheap alcohol in Alice Springs will be banned for three days because of fears an AFL match at the weekend will stretch police resources.
Northern Territory Licensing Commission says from March 2 to March 4 all sales of takeaway cask wine and fortified wines like port or green ginger wine will be prohibited.
The NAB Cup match between Adelaide Crows and Brisbane Lions is being held in the town on Friday, when the ban begins.
"AFL matches of this nature are great for the town and they do bring a lot of benefits to Alice Springs," says commission chairman Richard O'Sullivan.
"However, it does impact on the resources of police, the hospital and service providers," he says in a statement.
