Kiwi paddler Teneale Hatton is again on top of the world, winning the under-23 K1 title at the world marathon championships in Denmark overnight (NZT).
In a race that had fans on the edge of their seats, Hatton stuck to a bold game plan and some brilliant execution saw heredge Spain's Raquel Carbajo on the line to take her second world title in a month.
Hatton paddled most of the race in the lead pack of three with a good gap ahead of the next group. With only the last 1000m lap to go, Hatton still stuck with the pack even though she was first off after the portage, appearing to wait for them.
The Spanish paddler pulled out in front and Hatton sat on her wash right up until the last couple of hundred metres. At the very last minute Hatton just pulled out in front, seemingly effortlessly, to snatch the win courtesy of an impressively implemented game plan.
Hatton said ``it went exactly as planned'' and she ``never lost confidence in her ability to see it through''.
The 23-year-old earlier this month won gold in the K1 5000 at the canoe sprint world championships in Germany. She will to add another medal to her collection tonight in the 25.8km open race.
