And the ref officially waved away the contest just five seconds later as the South African lay sprawled on his back.
Thankfully, the challenger made it back to his feet with the help of an oxygen mask, but came up well short in his first world title fight, suffering his second loss in his 13th outing.
The previous record belonged to former WBO super-bantamweight champion Daniel Jimenez, who swiftly dealt with Harald Geier in 17 seconds back in 1994.
