Christchurch heavyweight Yamiko Chinula was the most impressive New Zealand boxer on the second day of the Oceania championships at Apia, Samoa yesterday.
Chinula knocked out Samoan No 1 Masoe Failaciga in the first round to set up a semifinal against Commonwealth gold medallist Brad Pitts of Australia.
Of the five New Zealand boxers in action, only Chinula and light heavyweight Reece Papuni registered wins. Papuni beat Piutau Pani of Tonga on points, 12-9.
The three unsuccessful boxers all lost narrowly on points.
Featherweight Dayne Williams of Auckland went down 13-15 to Ufa Deen of Tahiti while Nelson light welterweight Daniel Parkin lost by the same scoreline to Australian Qamil Alla.
New Zealand light heavyweight Zig Zag Wallace of Te Awamutu went down 31-33 to Francis Mamoe of American Samoa in a close, exciting contest.
There are four New Zealand fighters in action later today - welterweights Justin Potter amd Kahukura Bentson, middleweight Nathan McEwen and super heavyweight Isekeli Maama.
