Shane Cameron's heavyweight bout on Thursday has run into some heavyweight drama.
Cameron's opponent for the fight, Kelvin Davis, is in hospital with a broken back in two places.
Davis suffered the injury while on a training run last night, jumping over Auckland's Greenhithe bridge to avoid a car. The American will undergo surgery tomorrow and be forced to spend the next month in New Zealand.
Fight for Life promoter Dean Lonergan says details are sketchy, but he has a fair idea of what happened. He says Davis was obviously used to cars driving on the other side of the road and he was spooked by the cars being so close. Lonergan had been out to dinner with the boxer before the accident.
Cameron's manager Kenny Reinsfeld says it is more bad luck for the "cursed" Cameron, but his team is more worried about Davis than the fight. He says they hope his recovery is as quick as it can be, as at the end of the day this is just a boxing match and Kelvin's life is more important.
Brazilian Jucimar Francisco Hipolito is Davis' likely replacement and will arrive in New Zealand on Wednesday.
