Shane Cameron knocked out Dominic Vea on Wednesday night with a broken hand.
Cameron believes he suffered the injury in the fourth or fifth round.
He showed little ill effect during the fight but afterwards remarked that his hand had "felt it" when he connected with his knockout punch.
It is the third time in his career that Cameron has KO'd an opponent after breaking a hand in a bout.
Scans yesterday revealed it was the same metatarsal he broke in a fight with Bob Mirovic in 2007. On that occasion Cameron fought largely with one hand before knocking out Mirovic in the eighth round.
In 2009, Cameron suffered multiple hand fractures in an 11th-round stoppage of American Robert Davis. The subsequent surgery delayed his showdown with David Tua for four months.
Cameron's manager Ken Reinsfeld said the new injury was not as bad as the previous breaks, but Cameron still faces at least three months of inactivity.
Cameron's camp remains hopeful of snaring a big money fight against Danny Green despite the Australian losing his IBO Cruiserweight world title when he was knocked out by Antonio Tarver on Wednesday night.
Cameron produced a spectacular 12th round knockout of Vea on the undercard of the Green-Tarver fight, his most impressive display since dropping down from heavyweight.
The 38-year-old Green has yet to say if he will retire. Reinsfeld is still confident a Green-Cameron fight remains a viable proposition despite Green losing his title.
"I think there would be a lot of interest in it," Reinsfeld said. "Shane is the Commonwealth champion."
Green's camp had also expressed an interest in fighting Cameron, Reinsfeld said.
Cameron was well ahead on all three judges cards when he KO'd Vea with a clean four-punch combination mid-way through the final round. Two judges had him five points ahead, while a third had him three points up.
Reinsfeld said he had a back-up plan should the Green fight fall through.
