New Zealand's bowls representatives made an encouraging start at the World Singles Champion of Champions in Christchurch yesterday.
Sharon Sims won her two matches while Dwayne Cameron lost one and won one to be well placed after the first day of action.
Sims, the reigning world pairs champion, opened her campaign by beating Ester Sanchez, of the Norfolk Islands, 14-3, 6-7, 2-0.
"I just had to hang in there really. I thought I played well in the second set but Ester just came back," Sims said. "In the tiebreak I just got in there and crossed my fingers."
Sims then saw off Papua New Guinea 9-5, 10-4.
Cameron lost his first round-robin match to Fiji's Saijad Khan 6-7, 3-11, before rebounding for a 10-4, 8-7 victory over his Philippines opponent.
