Gary Lawson won the battle of the New Zealand bowlers against Russell Meyer but earlier losses ensured both missed the final of the Golden Nugget Invitation singles tournament at Tweed Heads in New South Wales.
Lawson beat Meyer, the defending champion, 25-16 in yesterday's final group match.
It left Lawson third in pool B with three wins from five matches, while Meyer was fifth out of six in the pool with two wins.
The winner of each pool in the 12-man tournament reached the final, which was to be contested today between Australian internationals Kelvin Kerkow and Nathan Rice.
