New Zealand opened their account at the Champions Challenge international men's hockey tournament with a 2-2 draw against India in Argentina today.
The Black Sticks trailed 0-1 at halftime in Salta, where eight countries are competing in the tournament, the winners of which earn promotion to the top tier Champions Trophy next year.
New Zealand are ranked eighth in the world and India 12th.
Their next match is on Wednesday against ninth-ranked Belgium, who beat China today, while Pakistan beat Canada 2-1.
