When praising players after the Tall Blacks' 67-57 victory over China, head coach Paul Henare had one player he wanted to thank more than most.
Isaac Fotu played a key role for the Tall Blacks, contributing 15 points and five rebounds in the win, but he could just have easily been 10,000 kilometres away at NBA Summer League in Las Vegas.
After a strong season playing in Germany, Fotu was invited by the Boston Celtics to join their Summer League squad, in what would have been his first taste of the NBA.
However, to join them in time, he would have had to leave New Zealand yesterday - therefore missing the clash against China.
Remarkably, Fotu barely considered the opportunity.
