Isaac Fotu played a key role for the Tall Blacks, contributing 15 points and five rebounds in the win, but he could justhave easily been 10,000 kilometres away at NBA Summer League in Las Vegas.
After a strong season playing in Germany, Fotu was invited by the Boston Celtics to join their Summer League squad, in what would have been his first taste of the NBA.
However, to join them in time, he would have had to leave New Zealand yesterday - therefore missing the clash against China.
Remarkably, Fotu barely considered the opportunity.
"I thought about it for one or two seconds and then I realised how much I love playing for this team, playing with my brothers, and we had a home game in Auckland in front of my friends and family - so it didn't take long at all to decide that."
"This game was special to me, [I haven't played] in my city for a long time. I just love coming back and playing for this team and it made it extra special being at home. Every chance I get I'm going to be playing [for the Tall Blacks]."
Henare was extremely effusive in his praise for Fotu's decision after the game.
"It's unbelievable - for it to be a no-brainer decision for him just emphasises the fact of how much this team means to him.
"That's what makes this team so special, when guys are willing to get out here and go to battle with their brothers. That's a pretty special decision to make. The pride these guys have in playing for their country is amazing."
Fotu might not get another offer to attend this year's Summer League, but after earning the victory tonight, he has no regrets.
"It doesn't matter to me - I'm going to enjoy tonight."
