The 206cm American has put his hand up to play in the Kings' next fixture against Illawarra on Thursday, before their next home game against Cairns on Saturday.
Powell's unveiling comes after the Kings were exposed in the paint without star Julian Khazzouh in Saturday's season-opening loss against returning franchise Brisbane.
Powell, who put up 26 points and 18 rebounds in his last stop in China earlier this year, said his playing experience in seven different countries would help him adapt quickly to the NBL.
"I think that's one of the good things about me and what I can bring to the table - just being a part of different things and different situations," he said.
"When I was in Puerto Rico and China, I had more of a scoring demand as well as rebounding and defending. But I've been in other places like when I went to Argentina, not so much. I had to adjust to that.
"So the game is all about adjustments. I'm here to be a part of something special, not cause problems and be a headache."
