People behaving badly are threatening to turn the popular Auckland Waterfront time trial cycle races into a shambles.
Many of the country's best young cyclists have made the regular Sunday morning races a keenly contested affair and some have gone on to be among the country's best.
Before Sunday's sixth round, hoons in a car smashed a beer bottle in the path of teams warming up along Tamaki Drive. The glass was cleared before racing began and police were informed.
Auckland Grammar bounced back from their disqualification in the previous round to score a convincing 27-second win over St Kentigern in the senior boys race. Their winning time of 21m 10s was impressive as the combination of the wet road and glass on it produced more than the usual number of punctures.
Diocesan, despite slowing a little to ensure their fifth rider remained in contact in case of a puncture, were still too good for EGGS in the senior girls, winning by 38s.
In a repeat of race five, Diocesan beat WGHS and St Cuthbert's in the junior girls. The winning time of 26m 17s was the same as St Kentigern rode to claim third in the senior race.
Attention now turns to the NZSS individual championships on and around Mt Wellington on August 26 and 27. The final time trials are scheduled for September 10.
Athletics
Defending champions had a good day in the secondary school road race championships at Pukekohe.
Esther Keown set the ball rolling with her comfortable win over Annika Pfitzinger who held off Riah Mildenhall in the junior girls race over 3km. With good support from her Epsom GGS team-mates, Mildenhall led the school home in both team races.
Kelsi Petterson (Pakuranga) too had a big win in defending her intermediate title over 4km. She was almost 40s clear of Hannah Morgan with Annie Keown holding on for third. The standard in this race was outstanding with the first three place-getters all faster than the winner of the senior race over the same distance.
Mathew Mildenhall (AGS) also was comfortably clear of the field in retaining his senior title over 6km. He also spearheaded victories for his school in both the three- and six-person team races.
Mt Roskill Grammar again showed out. Tadele Tekle-Hamanot and Halie Tesfaye scored a great quinella in the junior boys race over 4km. Fetalow Zomo and Biruk Belachew chased Mildenhall in the senior race. The school also collected second place in the three-person senior race and third in the junior three-person team race.
Pukekohe, while not figuring in the individual placings, revealed their depth by taking four places in the team races.
Basketball
Even with two of their regular starting five sidelined through injury, Westlake BHS were still far too strong for Dilworth in premier boys action. Scoring 32 points in each of the first three quarters, WBHS were always in control.
Double-doubles to David Clarke (30pts, 15 rebounds), Daniel Leemeyer (14, 10), Nick Brunner (12, 10) and Robert Loe (21, 20) underlined their all-round strength.
Dilworth showed some fight in finishing the fourth quarter level at 20-20.
Well-led by Tini Mata'afa, Moonho Jung and Paaka Hakaraia, Kelston BHS were too strong for Rangitoto edging home 80-66.
Avondale College completely dominated their game against bottom-of-the-table MAGS winning 130-48.
In the girls, Massey, aided by a strong effort off the bench, overcame an 11-point deficit midway through the third quarter to get up and beat Manurewa 71-69 in a thriller.
Chevannah Paalvast again led the way scoring 17 points.
Led by the outstanding Kushla Dunning, who scored a remarkable 43 points, Avondale were always in control in beating Rosehill 83-60. Dunning showed out on attack and defence. Rosehill's MVP went to Elyse Clark who continues to impress in only her second year in the sport.
Hockey
Auckland Grammar had the tough workout they were looking for ahead of this week's Rankin Cup tournament in Christchurch when pushed all the way before getting home 1-0 over a spirited WBHS XI in the boys inter-city final.
With home advantage and with a strong defensive effort, AGS scored early and held on to that precious eighth-minute lead in the face of some desperate Westlake attack.
The visitors too produced some sound defence to stymie AGS efforts to increase their lead.
In the play-off for third, King's beat Massey 4-1.
With their 2-0 win over WGHS in the girls inter-city final, Diocesan maintained their season-long unbeaten record.
Katie Glynn was again in outstanding form. Her goals one in each half ensured their victory at the AGS turf.
With St Cuthbert's beating Rangitoto 1-0 in the play-off for third, all play-off matches (boys and girls) were won by Auckland schools over North Harbour rivals.
Honoured
What began as a labour of love for R.H. Hal Marryatt in 1961 as the Pakuranga College delegate to the Auckland Secondary Schools Cricket Association was recognised at their 106th annual meeting last week when he was awarded the association's first life membership.
Marryatt was chairman from 1972-78 after which he was asked to become the association's patron - a role he still fulfils today. In 1989 he agreed to a cup being named after him. This is awarded to the one-day champions in the 1A grade.
He was awarded a Queen's Service Medal for his contribution to the community in 1990.
Netball
Mt Albert Grammar just missed clinching the Auckland premier senior A title in their last-round clash over Auckland GGS when held 32-32. AGGS took the title by four points from MAGS with St Kentigern and St Cuthbert's tied for third.
Mt Roskill GS won the senior A grade from King's and EGGS.
Rugby
AUCKLAND
Old rivals King's and Auckland Grammar will move to unfamiliar territory and on an unfamiliar day to decide the senior 1A championship.
The traditional foes line up at Eden Park on Sunday as the curtain-raiser to Auckland's Air NZ Cup clash with Bay of Plenty to battle for supremacy again.
King's needed a late try to get home 18-15 in their semifinal against KBHS who were playing their eighth consecutive semifinal.
With a strong wind to help them, King's led 11-3 at halftime but a determined Kelston side hit back to score two second-half tries and took a 15-11 lead which they held until two minutes from time when Randall Kamea scored from a back row move. William Brittain added the extras to get King's - the round-robin winners - through.
AGS had no problems in beating De La Salle 29-7 in the other semifinal.
After racing to a 25-0 lead in the first half, Dilworth had to hold out a determined Macleans College fightback before winning their 1B semifinal 25-12.
Dilworth will play Papatoetoe High in that final, also at Eden Park, after Papatoetoe scraped home 9-3 over Southern Cross Campus.
NORTH HARBOUR
Continuing their strong rally after a slow start to the season, Rosmini cruised to a 21-7 win over neighbours Takapuna GS in their semifinal of the 1A championship.
Rosmini will now meet Westlake BHS in Sunday's final at North Harbour Stadium. WBHS just sneaked through with their 9-8 win over Massey HS.
COUNTIES MANUKAU
They were celebrating big time at the Waiuku Rugby Club as Manurewa High beat Wesley College's 2nd XV 31-5 to win the 1st XV championship for the first time since 1988.
It was a brilliant display in strong winds as Manurewa scored four tries to one. Despite playing with the wind in the first half, Wesley could do little as Manurewa raced to a 17-0 lead.
Tries to Connor Talaaimanu, Danny Atamu, Petelo Sili and captain Aziah Ikitule, complemented by a conversion and three penalties from Tim Nanai Williams, ensured the victory.
Manurewa have had little time to celebrate however as they will be at Growers Stadium this afternoon to face the Wesley College 1st XV - who play their rugby in the CM under-21 club competition - with the winner earning the right to play in the national championship.
Table tennis
Mt Albert Grammar's Authman Al-Saudi sprang a surprise with his win in the Auckland individual championships at the Auckland Stadium.
Al-Saudi went through unbeaten to claim the crown. In the final he beat current Oceania cadet champion Phillip Xiao (AGS).
Sophie Shu, who represented New Zealand at this year's Commonwealth Games in Melbourne and was a member of the team who later played in the world tournament in Germany, beat Sabine Vogelsang (Mt Roskill GS) in the senior girls final.
Terry Zeng (Macleans) and Tara la Grange (WGHS) took the junior titles.
In the weekly teams competition, MAGS caused a minor upset with their 4-3 win over AGS A. It was not a good night for AGS with all four teams going down.
