Ten Westlake players have gone to the United States with captain Jack Salt on the radar of several US colleges and was yesterday named in the Tall Blacks trial squad. Others seem set to follow.
Loe is in his senior year at St Louis, who are through to the second round of the NCAA tournament. Loe has been a starting five player for them.
Since the inception of the Sports Institute at the school, WBHS have won four national secondary schools basketball titles and been runners-up on another three occasions.
The institute is for Year 9 and 10 boys with the focus on basketball, hockey, soccer and cricket. Pupils are able to take, as an example, basketball for three periods a week as a subject option with a mix of on-court time and in the strength and conditioning programme run in association with AUT.
In Year 10 distance running and rowing are added as further options, again with AUT strength and conditioning coaches playing a part.
Westlake head of sport Rob Taylor said all boys are encouraged to play at least two sports.
"Tom Abercrombie, as an example, played volleyball and basketball and Mike Harris, who is now playing rugby with the Reds, was an age group national volleyball player in the same year he was in our 1st XV," said Taylor. "In all our SPI programmes we make a point of our premier coaches coaching at the junior level in the SPI programme to ensure consistency and discipline standards.
"If any student in the programme slips up academically they can be removed. Tai Webster was dropped one year as we worked closely with him to ensure he got both his studies and sport balance right.
"His efforts last year on the court and in the classroom were exceptional as a result."
The institute is a big attraction at the school with all applicants - this year there were 250 chasing 50 or 60 places - tested academically as well as being trialled in their chosen sport.
While the institute encourages and promotes sporting excellence in Years 9 and 10, the emphasis from Year 11 is on academic achievement.
Given that edict, sport might be seen as taking a backseat but results suggest otherwise, with the school among the best in North Harbour rugby and in city-wide competition in cricket, soccer, cycling and, of course, basketball.
With a roll of 2200, the demands are plenty. While the emphasis in basketball is on the premier team and the senior A team who play in an under-19 league, the school has another 31 teams who play on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights at the North Shore Events Centre.
Meanwhile, after an epic overtime first game between Rangitoto and Westlake BHS, expectations were high for the rematch.
From the outset play swung back and forth but by halftime Rangitoto were six points to the good then, with fantastic shooting from beyond the 3-point arc, they stretched their lead in the third quarter to 18 points but just as they looked like they may pull away for good, Westlake became more aggressive, reducing the deficit to 10 points by the end of the quarter.
WBHS maintained the intensity in the fourth quarter, with Pierce Bryers coming off the bench playing strong, aggressive defence and driving the ball hard to the rim at the other end.
Jaylen Gerrand controlled the tempo down the stretch and finished with a game high 41 points, including 17 of 21 free throws. Free throws became the difference as Westlake outscored Rangitoto 30-16 in the final quarter to win 95-91 and retain top spot on the premier table.
