Sharp shooting from Auckland Girls Grammar's Insug Jung played a major part in her team's scrappy 69-64 basketball win over Avondale College on Monday night.
"Ziggy" was in hot form, sinking multiple three-pointers, and was the standout performer for coach Anthony Keung. Avondale put up a strong fight, trailing by only two points at halftime. However AGGS' stoic defence plus several successful fast breaks resulted in an unassailable lead by the end of the third quarter.
AGGS, reigning premiership and regional champions, are in third place at the mid-point of their season with six wins from seven games. But if they are to repeat last year's success they must do it with a much younger side and only a few core senior players.
Mt Albert Grammar lead with an eight win-one loss record. They are closely followed by Rangitoto, who have won all seven of their games. AGGS and Diocesan round out the top four.
In the boys' premiership, seventh-placed Avondale beat sixth-placed Onehunga in a battle to get clear of the relegation zone. Avondale kept a seven-point lead until the final quarter when they ran away to win 93-75.
With eight wins each, Auckland Grammar and Sacred Heart share the premiership lead after nine rounds. Westlake Boys High School and Dilworth round out the top four with the bottom half of the table some way back.
