Kirk Penney's frustrating spell on the Australian National Basketball League (ANBL) sidelines is set to end this week, with the star guard coming through the New Zealand Breakers' training today unscathed.
Penney, the ANBL's reigning MVP, has missed the Breakers' past nine matches due to a back injury.
But, barring any mishaps before tipoff, the prolific points scorer will suit up against the Cairns Taipans in Auckland on Thursday night.
"It was just great to practise with the guys today and I felt really good," Penney said.
"It's just the strength I felt when I was making penetrating moves to the basket. I was really happy with that."
Penney rated himself about 85 per cent towards full fitness and expected to improve further before the match.
He did not know whether he would be in the starting five or would come off the bench against the Taipans, but said the issue was irrelevant.
He just wanted to spend time back on court and to be contributing.
"It's been seven weeks now just watching from the sidelines," he said.
"It definitely helps you to appreciate the game. It's just so much fun to be out there playing."
The Breakers have won five and lost four in Penney's absence for a 6-6 record that leaves them fifth on the table.
