Basketball: Breakers sign Aussie vet as Webster awaits drug ruling

The Breakers have moved swiftly to cover for the likely absence of shooting guard Corey Webster, signing Australian Daryl Corletto.

The veteran Melbourne Tiger was unveiled by the defending NBL champions at yesterday's season-launch.

He has signed a one-year deal and will plug the gap left by Webster, who is facing a likely ban after testing positive for a banned substance last season.

Webster is believed to have tested positive for Kronic, a type of synthetic cannabis.

Although not performance-enhancing, it is on the World Anti-Doping Agency banned list.

Webster, who has tested positive for cannabis before while playing in the NZNBL, has been stood down by the Breakers until his fate is known.

Corletto, whose wife, Julie, is an Australian netball international, became surplus to requirements at the Tigers after the signing of NBA point guard Patrick Mills last week.

His presence should help restore some firepower as the Breakers head into the season without two of their premier perimeter shooters after Kirk Penney's exit to Spanish club Baloncesto Fuenlabrada and Webster's suspension.

The club will play three games at Vector Arena this season, starting with the opening match of their title defence against the Sydney Kings on October 28.
