Basketball: Breakers hail their ANBL depth

The Breakers are embracing rather than questioning their depth.

The options have been highlighted by shooting guard Corey Webster being benched for the opening game, while Rob Loe and Akil Mitchell are quality big men bench replacements.

Kirk Penney started ahead of Webster, and says competition isn't a negative for the team.

He says there wave after wave of weaponry has players playing less than 30 minutes and remaining relatively fresh.

Penney says whether players are starting on the court or on the bench doesn't matter.

The incumbent forward-centre pairing of Mika Vukona and Alex Pledger now have several players breathing down their necks, with new players Mitchell and Loe offering different skill sets.

Pledger says past Breakers teams have shown how crucial multifaceted players are.

He says their best teams have had multiple players who can play multiple positions.

He says as a results, it makes practices just as hard, if not harder than the games.

The Breakers head to Perth tomorrow for Friday's game against the defending champion Wildcats.
