Basketball: Breakers add another guard

The New Zealand Breakers added another piece to the roster jigsaw for the 2014/15 Australian National Basketball League season with the signing of Australian combo-guard Rhys Carter on a one-year deal.

The 30-year-old Carter brings a vast array of experience from leagues around the world, including stints in Europe, the ANBL with the South Dragons (winning a championship alongside Mika Vukona in 2009), Perth Wildcats and at the end of last season he helped the Adelaide 36ers in to the post-season.

Breakers head coach Dean Vickerman had no doubt he got the right player for the right fit as the club announced the acquisition today.

"We were always looking for a combo back-up guard capable of playing both the '1' spot and with the players we have lost this year a player that is a threat from the perimeter as well," Vickerman said.

"Rhys fits that description, he is experienced and at 30 years old he has been a pro for ten years and has been on very good teams. There is an x-factor about him, he has the ability to make a defensive play or hit a big shot."

Carter is currently in Australia and said the decision to join the Breakers was easy.

"From the outside, it seems like a really well-run and professional club, and the team looks to be a real contender I think," Carter said. "I wrote to Dean a week ago to gauge interest, and when he called to discuss the role it sounded perfect for me and I jumped at the opportunity. I was only a day or two off signing with a club in Europe, but I'm glad I got the call in time."

Carter's signing means there are nine players on the Breakers' roster for next year, joining Cedric Jackson, Corey Webster, Tom Abercrombie, Reuben Te Rangi, Mika Vukona, Duane Bailey, Tai Wesley and Alex Pledger with development players yet to be determined.
