Harbour Heat have been boosted by the arrival of import shooting guard Kavossy Franklin ahead of tomorrow's match against league newcomers Southland Sharks at the North Shore Events centre.
Widely expected to be among the title contenders, the Heat had little trouble disposing of the Otago Nuggets in their opening match last week. Now, with the veteran American checking in, the already high-powered Heat side has become an even more imposing proposition.
Although Franklin would take time to find his feet he would be in the line-up tomorrow, Heat coach Judd Flavell said. "We will ease him in to the side and certainly won't be expecting too much too early," Flavell said.
"It will take some time for him to come to terms with our plays and his role within the team, both on offence and defence. But I have no doubt that a player of his experience and class will bring plenty to our season. Kavossy will be a leader, someone who can mentor the younger guys."
Shooting guard Franklin, 34, had a distinguished career in the Australian NBL, winning a championship with the Sydney Kings.
Heat were impressive enough against the Nuggets, although Flavell was concerned they clocked off at times. "There was some rustiness and players weren't on the same page at times but there can be no excuses, we have to be better [tomorrow].
"The league is looking like it will be very close this year, even at this early stage, it is vital then that we win our home games and set ourselves up for a good season.
