Basketball: Turkish government seeks four-year jail term for NBA player Enes Kanter

New York Knicks centre Enes Kanter has already had his passport cancelled in his native Turkey for voice his opinion about the government.

Now, reports from the Turkish state-run news agency Anadolu Agency state government prosecutors are seeking more than four years in prison for the NBA player on charges of insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Anadolu Agency reported a prosecutor from the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office in Istanbul prepared an indictment after Erdogan's lawyer filed a complaint against Enes Kanter on June 17, 2016.

Kanter cannot return to Turkey because his passport has been cancelled, and he would be tried in absentia.

The 25-year-old is a vocal supporter of Fethullah Gulen, the American-based cleric blamed by Turkey for last year's failed military coup.

Speaking to Associated Press, Kanter said he wasn't worried about the reports.

"I think it's just nothing to me, man. I'm in America. I'm good and my focus right now is just going out there, playing basketball, have fun with my teammates and just winning and just thinking about playoffs."
