The New Zealand men's basketball side's Olympic dream ended in Venezuela this morning, but not before a show of defiance that saw them defeat Angola 68-64.
After losing heavily to Macedonia yesterday, the Tall Blacks needed to beat their African rivals by 27 points to advance to the quarter-finals of the Olympic qualifying tournament - the top three teams advance to London - and at one stage held an 18-point advantage before being reigned back in.
It was a disappointing way to go out but one big positive was the performance of 17-year-old Tai Webster, who led all scorers with 21 points including five three-pointers and provided the offensive spark needed without injured duo Kirk Penney and Tom Abercrombie.
If New Zealand were slow out of the blocks against Macedonia, they remedied the situation in their second outing, running up seven points - including a three from Webster - before their rivals got on the board.
Forward Rob Loe chimed in with another long-distance bucket later in the period as the lead grew to eight, but Angola got back in contention when two fouls from veteran Casey Frank - one an unsportsmanlike - gifted them six quick points.
