The Thunder led by as many as 10 points during the match but were never able to run up an insurmountable lead against the Kings.
They battled to put the struggling Sacramento side away, but the Kings would not lay down and saw good production across the board.
However, buoyed by point guard Russell Westbrook's 99th career triple-double, as well as 21 points from both Carmelo Anthony and Paul George, they came away with the win.
As a result, the side have jumped into the fourth seed in the Western Conference.
With the match against the Kings being the first night of a back-to-back, the Thunder would have little time to prepare for their next match - away to the Atlanta Hawks.
Because of that, Adams' status would likely remain up in the air right until the team-list deadline.
Like Sacramento, Atlanta are likely to find themselves selecting in the lottery positions in this year's NBA draft, sitting at the bottom of the eastern Conference with a 20-47 record.
It's likely the Thunder will take a cautious approach with Adams' injury with some important matches on the horizon.
Following the Atlanta match up, the Thunder take on the LA Clippers, who are battling for a playoff spot in the West, and the top two teams in the East in the Toronto Raptors and Boston Celtics.
