New Zealand took great interest from watching their opening opponents at the world championships, Russia, go down 74-69 to Canada in Toronto yesterday.
Canada, who drew their series last week 1-1 with the Tall Blacks, applied pressure successfully to their highly rated opponents, although the Russians will still start heavy favourites when the world's elite tournament starts in Indianapolis on Friday.
New Zealand coach Tab Baldwin was encouraged by the result.
"I was surprised that Canada's intensity gave Russia as much trouble as it did. That was good to see. We know we have to be intense like that to be successful against any of the teams we play, so this was a good indicator for us.
"Russia didn't disappoint me in terms of what they offered up, Canada just played a great game."
Baldwin has targeted his team's opening game since the draw was announced and if the Tall Blacks have aspirations of making the quarter-finals a win would be hugely important.
The last time the two teams met, New Zealand took Russia to double overtime in the Slam Down Under tournament before the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
But the Tall Blacks coach was adamant that Canada's victory should not bring a false sense of security among his players and supporters.
"Seeing Canada beat them has helped our belief level, but I don't believe it makes it easier for us."
