Basketball: Narrow wins open NBL season

New Zealand's National Basketball League tipped off on Saturday night, with several narrow wins to open the season.

Tall Black and Breakers guard Phill Jones hit a basket with two seconds remaining to give his Nelson Giants a 72-71 win over the Waikato Titans in Hamilton.

In Auckland the Stars won the Battle of the Bridge with an 82-65 win over North Harbour.

The Manawatu Jets scraped past the Taranaki Mountain Airs 84-81 and the Hawke's Bay Hawks downed the Canterbury Rams 88-72.
