BRISBANE - New Zealand have avoided the United States but face probably the best of the rest in the Goodwill Games men's basketball draw, which was made in Brisbane yesterday.
The Tall Blacks are in the same pool as hosts Australia, traditional power Brazil, and a Canadian side who upset Australia and impressed at the Olympics last September.
No European representatives are among the eight basketball teams invited to the four-yearly Goodwill Games from August 29 to September 9.
Australia and New Zealand represent the Oceania region and the rest are from the Americas.
The other group comprises the United States, who will be mainly college players, Puerto Rico, Argentina and Cuba.
The Tall Blacks will open their campaign on September 3 against Canada, a side they have faced often in recent years and beaten more than once.
They then face more difficult assignments against Brazil and Australia.
New Zealand must finish in the top two of their pool to reach the semifinals.
