Basketball: Detroit Pistons secure Blake Griffin from LA Clippers in six-man trade

The NBA trade market has been brought to life with reports that five-time All-Star power forawd Blake Griffin has been sent to the Detroit Pistons.

ESPN reports Griffin has been dealt in a six-man trade that will see him don the royal blue and red of the Pistons.

The package involves the Pistons receiving Griffin, back up centre Willie Reed and back up swingman Brice Johnson, in exchange for guard Avery Bradley, forward Tobias Harris, back up centre Boban Marnjanovic as well as a first-round and second-round draft pick.

Griffin has been with the Clippers since he was drafted with the first overall pick in the 2009 draft.

On July 1, Griffin reached an agreement on a five-year, US$171 million deal with the Clippers, however he did not get a no-trade clause as part of the new contract.

The move is likely to be the first of a clean up for the Clippers, with centre DeAndre Jordan and guard Lou Williams also said to be on the trading block.

The 2011 rookie of the year will link up with dominant centre Andre Drummond at the Pistons, as the Detroit side look set for a deep run into the playoffs.

The side currently sit just outside of a playoff spot, but are just three games behind the eight seed with plenty of the season left to play.

For the Clippers, the move is a timely one. The side lost All-Star guard Chris Paul to Houston in the offseason and have had their 2017-18 campaign derailed by injuries.

In saying that, the side will still be competitive. Bradley joins the team with the reputation as one of the best defensive guard in the lague, while Harris is a high volume scorer and capable rebounder.
