Basketball: Breakers sign new point guard

The Breakers today unveiled their first overseas import - and in a rare move for the ANBL, he is not strictly American.

Dominican Republic international Edgar Sosa will be running the point for the Breakers in the new campaign, filling a spot that proved somewhat troublesome last season.

The Breakers started the season with Ben Woodside at point guard but, after he suffered a long-term injury, recruited David Stockton and then Kevin Dillard as they missed out on a playoff berth.

Breakers coach Paul Henare said he was thrilled to welcome the club's first import into the roster for the 2017/18 season.

"Edgar is an exciting addition to the roster and is just the point guard to ignite this team," Henare said. "He brings a level of experience and calmness that is required to compete in the Australian NBL, and has variety in his game to react to whatever the situation demands.

"I enjoyed catching up with him while I was over in the States and am delighted to have his signature for the upcoming season. But on the floor, he is a winner and knows how to bring the best out of his team mates."

Sosa has three consecutive league championships to his name in Italy, Iran and most recently in Lebanon. His numbers during his most recent stint in the Italian top league with Juvecaserta Basket were impressive, averaging 19.4 points and 5.9 assists per game.

A well-travelled professional basketballer, Sosa will join his new teammates in late August for the start of pre-season training.

"The game of basketball has taken me to so many places and I am just excited to be heading to my new home," Sosa said. "I am a hard-nosed player that will give you everything I have in the game. I try to win, I pride myself on winning and will do all I can to be a winner again."

Sosa was confident he would bring a variety of weapons to the league, with options to suit whatever the game situation was throwing at him.

"I am an all-purpose guard, I can score the ball, I can make my teammates better. I just like to read the game and go with what I need to do.

"Sometimes it calls to be aggressive and score points and other times you have to get your teammates involved, so I feel I can adjust to any style of game."

The Breakers also announced today that naming-rights sponsor Sky City had extended its support for the club to a seventh year.

"The partnership is very strong and we look forward to more exciting developments this season," said general manager Dillon Boucher. "Basketball is on a well-publicised growth curve at all levels of the game, and the Breakers will continue to play our part in promoting the game to all levels of the community."
