Basketball: Stockton retires

John Stockton, one of the greatest players in professional basketball, has announced his retirement.

Stockton, 41, had been a National Basketball Association fixture for 19 years and was named one of the NBA's 50 greatest players.

He had most assists and steals in NBA history at 15,806 and 3265 respectively, also shooting .515 from the field, the fourth best by a guard.

The Stockton-to-Karl Malone combination was one of the most feared and effective scoring duos in basketball history.
