New Zealand were beaten 1-4 in their opening Sudirman Cup world teams badminton championship by hosts Scotland in Glasgow on Monday.
The series began with the mixed tie, with New Zealanders Dan Shirley and Renee Flavell upset by Watson Briggs and Imogen Bankier 13-21 15-21.
In the men's singles New Zealander John Moody beat Craig Goddard 14-21 21-5 21-12, coming from a game down to square the series.
In the women's singles, Scotland's Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Susan Hughes held her nerve in the first game to beat Rachel Hindley 22-20, then went on to win the second game 21-13 to give the hosts the edge.
Shirley and John Gordon lost the men's doubles 19-21 18-21 to Briggs and Andrew Bowman.
In the women's doubles, Donna Cranston and Flavell were beaten 10-21 18-21 by Rita Yuan Gao and Emma Mason.
The tournament will get tougher for the New Zealanders when they meet top seeds from their level three group, India.
