A British tourist had to be airlifted off Mt Tongariro after he suffered a suspected broken ankle.
The 60-year-old man and his wife made their way to the Oturere Hut on the eastern side of the mountain after he rolled his ankle about 3pm yesterday.
He was picked up by Taupo's Youthtown rescue helicopter about 9.30am today and taken to Taupo Hospital.
Pilot Nat Every said the man and his wife had been on holiday from the United Kingdom.
They were most appreciative and complimentary of the help they received, he said.
