Sir John Walker got a glimpse as to what his life-sized bronze statue will look like following the unveiling of a wax maquette statue of himself at Newmarket this morning.
The statue depicts Walker crossing the finish line during the 1500m final at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, where he won the gold medal.
The miniature version is a replica of the yet-to-be-completed life-sized model that will be erected in his hometown of Manurewa and sculpted by Joanne Sullivan, who is a member of the prestigious American Academy of Equine Art.
Sullivan's next task will be to complete the full bronze version of Walker's gold medal-winning exploits, which will cost about $160,000 to create, $150,000 of which has been funded by the Sir John Walker Legacy Trust.
