LONDON - A 22-year-old Briton who collapsed after completing the 2007 London Marathon died on Monday, race organisers said.
The man, who ran the 26.2 miles through the British capital on Sunday in some of the highest temperatures recorded during the 27-year history of the London marathon, collapsed after finishing and was taken to hospital.
"It is with regret that we can confirm that a 22-year-old man died peacefully this morning, having collapsed after successfully completing the London Marathon," organisers said in a statement. "We offer our deepest sympathy and condolences to his family and friends."
Almost 36,400 people started the London marathon on Sunday and a record 35,674 runners had crossed the finish line by 1745 GMT on race day. More than 600 people failed to complete the race -- including the Ethiopian pre-race favourite men's elite runner Haile Gebrselassie, who dropped out after around 19 miles.
Most runners come from Britain, but competitors from 42 other countries also took part, flying in from as far away as Zimbabwe, Australia, the United States and Ecuador.
