New Zealand's Stuart Farquhar and Tom Walsh both failed to meet the qualifying standards for next month's Athletics world championships in Moscow at the Lausanne Diamond League in Switzerland this morning.
Farquhar's throw of 80.42m in the javelin was good enough for third in the Diamond League meeting but was nearly 60cm short of the B qualifying standard for the world championships. The Hamilton 30-year-old led the competition after the first three rounds but was overtaken by Sweden's Kim Amb (82.65m) and double Olympic champion and training partner, Andreas Thorkildsen from Norway (81.54m).
Walsh threw 19.61m at his first Diamond League appearance but was well short of the qualifying standard of 20.10m, which is just 1cm more than his personal best.
The 21-year-old from Timaru, who has spent time training with Valerie Adams at her Swiss base, was eighth.
Olympic champion Reese Hoffa won with a throw of 21.88m.
