Athletics New Zealand is one of the sports to benefit in the recent announcement from High Performance Sport NZ (HPSNZ) regarding high performance funding for the next twelve months.
Athletics New Zealand has had its annual high performance funding increased by $150,000 to $2,750,000 for 2018. An additional $500,000 per annum will also continue to be directed to fund Athletics NZs highly successful integrated Paralympic high performance programme. These funding announcements are in line with the four year funding agreement secured after the Rio Olympics and Paralympics as we build towards Tokyo 2020 and they are ring-fenced for use against high performance.
Athletics NZ Chief Executive Hamish Grey is heartened by the announcement.
"This funding has been secured on the back of the hard work and good progress achieved by athletes, coaches and support staff and allows Athletics NZ to plan with confidence through to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games," said Grey.
"We are delighted with the partnership that we have with HPSNZ and believe this will assist us greatly as we target success in Tokyo. The funding will contribute towards athletes training and preparation costs to give them the best chance of success in Tokyo, as well as preparing the next generation of athletes for future Games."
Grey added, "While the funding is ring-fenced for use in high performance programmes, it does have a significant positive impact on the whole of Athletics across NZ. That said, the challenge for Athletics NZ remains trying to achieve the same security of funding for our vital grassroots programmes".
