Cameron French had an outstanding run in Canberra on Saturday to break the New Zealand 400m hurdles record, running 49.33 and securing an A nomination standard for the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in April.
The Hamilton athlete has been on the cusp of qualifying for major events for several years, but until now has not quite been able to secure qualifying times when they have mattered.
The A nomination standard means there should be no barriers to seeing his name on the team sheet on Friday.
Also in Canberra, sprinter Joseph Millar won the 200m final in 20.71 into a head wind, just outside the 20.44 B standard he was chasing.
The New Zealand Athletics team for the Gold Coast Games will be announced on Friday 2 February.
