LONDON (AP) Former triple jump world champion Phillips Idowu has had his license suspended for two years for drunk driving.
The 34-year-old Briton pleaded guilty in court Monday to driving near London last month while over the legal alcohol limit.
At Chelmsford Magistrates' Court, Idowu was ordered to complete 50 hours of unpaid work within the next 12 months as punishment. He must pay a fine of 145 pounds ($233) and 85 pounds ($137) in costs.
Idowu's solicitor said the athlete had been out with friends the previous night and had been to sleep, but was forced to leave home earlier than expected.
Idowu won a silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and gold at the world championships in Berlin the following year.
