Proud Auckland mum Meren Webster yesterday welcomed home her son Sam from his triumphant three-medal haul at the junior world track cycling championships in Russia.
Sam, 18, won gold in the individual sprint and the keirin and gold with Ethan Mitchell and Cameron Karwowski in the team sprint.
He said: "It's great to come home to such a warm welcome but it's quite strange seeing myself on TV and making the headlines ...
"I'd like to thank all the people who have helped get me here ... I'm very happy to achieve the three [first-place finishes], but I'm stepping up to the elite grades and I'm looking forward to making that leap."
