KEY POINTS:
Beatrice Faumuina faced an unfavourable wind at Porritt Stadium in Hamilton last night as she tried to secure a further qualifying performance in the discus for the world championships.
Competing at the Porritt Classic in round three of the Black Singlet Series, Faumuina had the discus out to 57.56m, a reasonable result for the conditions.
The winning throw came in the final round. Her next best, 57.51m, came in round three.
"It was hard work tonight, and unfair having to throw with the following wind. If it had been held from the other end of the ground you would have seen a long throw [because of the lift provided by a headwind]," said Faumuina.
"But you've just got to go with what you have on the day and abide by the rules," she said.
Craig Bearda scored a notable victory over Chris Donaldson in the 100m. Bearda was sharper over the closing stages, recording 10.9s into a stiff head wind, but Donaldson - in his first appearance in the Black Singlet Series - was credited with the same time.
Anna Smythe edged out Chantal Brunner in the women's 100m, both timed at 11.9s, again into a strong head wind.
Charlotte Osborne, back from a slight injury, showed good form over 400m in 56.8s before the Australian under 23 championships in Hobart this weekend.
Sam Rapson won the men's 400m in 48.4s.
Husband and wife Ben and Jessica Ruthe from Tauranga captured the 1500m events. Ben Ruthe out-sprinted the field in 3m 49.8s and Jessica Ruthe ran a personal best of 4m 19.6s after leading from start to finish. Kellie Palmer was second in 4m 28.9s.
Aunese Curreen of Samoa pipped Jason Stewart on the line for second in the men's race, setting a Samoan record of 3m 50.4s.
Ruthe said he was used to racing Stewart.
"We have raced each other since 1995, so it is good to get one on him," he said.
James Dolphin won the 200m in 21s and Monique Williams came through to beat Brunner in the women's 200m in 23.8s.
Stuart Farquhar was out to 72.28m in the javelin.
