Michael Whitehead has qualified for the 800m semifinals at the world youth athletics championships in Ostrava, Czech Republic.
The Pukekohe 17-year-old finished fourth in his heat in one minute 54.31 seconds to qualify for tomorrow morning's (NZ time) semis.
Whitehead was close to his personal best of 1min 53.60sec recorded in Christchurch last December.
Te Rina Keenan, of Auckland, finished ninth in the discus final with a 43.54-metre effort. She had qualified fifth for the final with a 45.47m throw. Armel Chou-Lee, of Waitakere City, was eighth in her group in the qualifying rounds with 41.95m and did not advance to the final.
Elizabeth Lamb, also of Waitakere City, was ninth in group B of the girls' high jump, qualifying clearing 1.7m but missed the final.
Kelsi Patterson, of Pakuranga, was 10th her 1500m heats in 4min 50.16sec and did not qualify.
Camille Buscomb (Cambridge) finished 13th in the 3000m final in 9min 54.31sec. The race was won by Kenyan Mercy Cherono in 8min 53.94sec.
