MOROCCO

IAAF Diamond League, International Meeting Mohammed VI Athletics, Rabat - 22 May 2016

Valerie Adams won the shot put with 19.68m, just one centimetre short of her 2014 meeting record. Adams beat world indoor championship silver medallist Hungarian Anita Mrton (18.51) and American Brittany Smith (17.84).

Adams series in the competition 18.93, 19.30, 19.20, 19.48, 19.68, 19.64.

Adams next competition will be Rome Golden Gala Diamond League on 2 June.

USA

Swarthmore Final Qualifier, Swarthmore PA, 16 May: Julian Matthews secured a Rio Olympic Games A performance standard with an outstanding run and personal best of 3:36.14 after finishing second in the 1500m. Hamish Carson was equally impressive in third, finishing just 0.11 behind Matthews, recording 3:36.25, a personal best by 1.79, just outside the A standard of 3:36.20, but comfortably under the NZ B standard of 3:37.20.

Eric Speakman also secured a career best of 3:37.85 in sixth. Nick Willis provided the ideal pace for three quarters of the race.

CANADA

Windsor Open Meeting, Windsor, 21 May: Hamish Carson got a confidence boosting win over 1500m in 3:36.65, but was just short of the Rio Olympic A qualifying time of 3:36.20.

Julian Matthews finished third in 3:36.94 with Eric Speakman running a personal best 3:37.44 in fifth. Nick Willis provided the pace.

With Willis having already been selected for Rio, two spots remain in the blue-ribbon event in which New Zealand has won three Olympic golds, a silver and two bronze medals.

Highgate Harriers Night of the 10,000m, Parliament Hill Track, Hampstead Heath London, 21 May: Paul Martelletti 10,000m 29:26.2 PB (8).

Great Manchester 10km Road Race, 22 May: Zane Robertson 28:54 (4). This time was a PB in a 10km race but Robertson has a faster 28:04 10km from the 2013 Chiba Ekiden Relay. Ethiopias Kenenisa Bekele won the Manchester race in 28:08.

FRANCE

PORTUGAL

Nick Southgate, competing in the pole vault at a competition in Lisbon cleared 5.40m, just shy of his personal best of 5.47m, but may have the satisfaction of setting a national indoor record as the competition was moved indoors due to bad weather.

HAMILTON

Throwers Meeting, Porritt Stadium - 22 May 2016

Rio bound shot putter Jacko Gill was out to 20.00m in the shot put. He also threw 19.87m and 19.81m. Julia Ratcliffe won the hammer throw with 68.20m just over a metre short of her New Zealand allcomers and resident record. Amber Brown was second with the 4kg in 45.69m PB. Anthony Nobilo threw the 5kg hammer 60.01m and the 1.5kg discus 39.89m. In the womens discus Siositina Hakeai threw 57.48m and Te Rina Keenan 54.16m. Connor Bell 1.25kg DT 54.20m.

WELLINGTON

93rd Vosseler Shield Mountain Races, Mt Victoria - 21 May 2015

World cross country junior 2005 representative Tim Hodge won the senior 10km in 40:45 from Nathan Tse 41:28 and Brian Garmonsway 41:46. Stephen Day took out the MM40 in 41:38 and David Kettles the MM50 in 46:36. Paul Sharp won the MM60 5km in 24:22. Amanda Broughton won the womens 5km in 23:23, from Jo Crawford 23:31 and Lizzy Bunckenburg 24:28. Renae Creser won the MW in 25:32, Victoria Humphries the MW 50 in 24:36 and Michele Allison the MW60 in 28:14. Harry Burnard MU20 winner with 19:52 for 5km, from Rusi Jagose 20:00. Max Karamanolis won the MU15 3.7km in 12:30. Other winners over 3.7km, Jess Kikstra U20 in 14:20 from Kelsey Forman 14:22, Phoebe McKnight U18 13:28 from Jayme Maxwell 14:33 and Esther Kozyniak U15 in 14:29.

Ekiden Walking Relay, incorporating the Race Walking New Zealand road relay championship, Trentham - 15 May 2015

The A division, fully judged, was won by Racewalking Auckland in for them the slow time of 4:05:42. During the race, two of their five team members had to be replaced during their legs due to injury. Taranaki Race Walking Club was second in 4:17:48 and Wellington Scottish were third in 4:31:55. The B Division, partially judged, was won by Trentham United A. C. in 4:38:37 from Manawatu/Wanganui 4:51:09 and Wellington Scottish 4:59:56. This is the tenth year the relay has been held and this year the outstanding walk was by Laura Langley of Hastings, walking for Auckland who did her 10km leg in 53:18.

Athletics Wellington Awards - 18 May 2016

James Preston and Alison Andrews-Paul were announced as male and female athlete of the year at the annual awards at the Dockside Bar and Restaurant. Andrews-Paul was also named senior woman middle distance athlete and Preston was named jointly with Hamish Carson as the senior middle distance runner of the year. Max Spencer and Phoebe McKnight each collected two awards and Phoebe Edwards was a multiple winner on the night. Her coach Mike Ritchie was named coach of the year with Amanda Goldsmith taking out the junior coach award. Brother and sister Scott and Anna Thomson collected the jumper of the year awards. Scott sharing the men with Sam Pinson.

Jim McIlroy received the official award and Don Dalgliesh and Peter Rendall were made Life Members of Athletics Wellington.

Thirty awards were presented to recipients throughout the greater Wellington and Wairarapa region. They covered track and field, cross country and relay events for athletes, coaches and volunteers.

CHRISTCHURCH

Holloway Memorial Cross Country Races, Old Ascot Golf Course - 21 May 2016

Four times national 3000m steeplechase champion Fiona Crombie won the senior womens 6km in in 22:28 from Angela Whyte 23:37 and Elise Sutherland 24:28. Maggie Chorley was the fastest master winning the MW45 in 23:59. 2012 national half marathon champion Oska Inkster-Baynes won the senior 8km in 25:10 from Sean Eustace 25:20 and Ben Musson 25:56. Chris Mardon won the MM45 in 27:27. The junior men 6km went to Nick Moulai in 19:43 from Mathew Scott 20:23 and Matthew Clough won the youth men 4km in 14:05 from Ayrton Shadbolt 14:16. Liliana Braun won the youth women 4km in 14:42 from Harriet Bush 15:18 and Navajo Prentice 15:35. The junior womens 4km was won by Mairi Law 16:11 and Natalie Dryden 16:17.

SOUTHLAND

Gore Half Marathon - 22 May 2016

Jack Beaumont ran within 50 seconds of the course record to win the half in 1:11:30 despite rain, hail, strong winds and a wind chill that took temperatures down to low single digits. The hilly course is not a fast one in the best of conditions and these certainly were not the best of conditions. The U20 mountain running champion from the previous weekend said he had to battle hard in the wind over the early stages but once wind was behind him he was able to pick up the pace, covering the final 5km in 15 mins. Otagos Shaun Barlow was second over the line, almost 11 minutes in arrears in 1:22:10 but took the masters title while Jack McNaughton (1:23:10) finished third and first U20. Hannah Miller (Gore) was almost as dominant in the womens race, running 1:24:57, over six minutes ahead of Natasha Poole. Debbie Telfer was first masters woman in 1:39:36.
