Tom Walsh has posted the biggest win of his career, throwing 21.39m to win the final Diamond League meet of the season in Brussels.
It is Walsh's first Diamond League victory, in which he beat the three medallists from last month's world championships in Beijing.
Four centimetres separated the top three finishers.
Jamaican O'Dayne Richards, bronze medallist in Beijing and Commonwealth Games champion, set 21.37m in the first round, a distance Walsh surpassed by 2cm to take the lead in round three.
World champion Joe Kovacs threw 21.35m in round four.
Kovacs secured the overall Diamond League season title from German David Storl, who finished fourth in this event with 21.09m.
Rounding out the top class field to finish behind Walsh, world indoor champion Ryan Whiting was fifth and double Olympic champion Tomasz Majewski seventh.
"I was really satisfied with my season," Walsh said. "The only thing I would change would be my fourth placing at the worlds, but overall my consistency was a lot better and hopefully I can go on like this into Olympic year."
Walsh took third place overall in the league for 2015.
He competes in one more event at Bad Kostritz in Germany on Sunday before heading home.
He remains a strong medal contender for next year's Olympics, beating all of the world's top athletes at least once in the season.
