Track greats Sebastian Coe and Steve Ovett will join an impressive array of guests at a tribute dinner for former world record holder John Walker in Auckland on April 3.
The black tie dinner will honour Walker, who was a dominant figure on the track during the 1970s. Personal milestones in Walker's career included winning the Olympic gold medal in 1976 and running over 100 sub-four minute miles. He held the world records for the mile and 2000m.
Special guests at the dinner will include former Prime Minister Jim Bolger, Auckland Mayor John Banks, Sir Murray Halberg and fellow sporting figures Ian Ferguson, Arch Jelly, Andy Haden, Waka Nathan, Fred Allen, Dick Tayler, Colin Meads, Alison Roe and Dick Quax.
Coe was Olympic 1500m champion in 1980 and 1984, the only athlete to ever win the event twice. He later went into politics and was a British member of Parliament for five years before becoming a member of the House of Lords.
Ovett was Olympic champion in the 800m in 1980 and with Coe and Steve Cram dominated world middle-distance running for more than a decade.
